DOVER — One person was killed late Monday afternoon when an Amtrak passenger train struck a vehicle that then burst into flames, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Toriano Dempsey, 42, of Mulberry was driving north on an access road in a 2012 Buick when the car crossed the railroad tracks near State Road 574 and Jordan Road. The car was struck by the train at 4:35 p.m., FHP said.
Dempsey was pronounced dead at the scene.
None of the 147 occupants aboard the two-engine, eight-car train was injured.
The train was traveling from Miami to Tampa and sustained minor damage, according to state troopers, but was not derailed.
