Driver, 17, killed when he hits tree while talking on phone

Teen driver talking on phone has fatal crash

A 17-year-old boy died after he lost control of his car in north Tampa while speeding and talking on his mobile phone, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.

Jordan Luis Rodriguez, of 14016 Village Terrace Drive, was traveling north on Northdale Boulevard around 5:15 p.m. Thursday when he failed to follow a curve at Silverhill Drive, the Sheriff's Office said.

Rodriguez lost control of his 1999 Chevrolet Lumina, crossed into the southbound lanes of Northdale and crashed into a tree. Rodriguez was not wearing his seat belt, the Sheriff's Office said. He died at the scene.

Alcohol did not appear to be a factor in the crash, the sheriff's office said. An investigation is continuing.
