TAMPA — A pair of Hillsborough County deputies helped rescue a man who suffered a medical problem while driving and crashed into two cars Thursday morning.
Martin Edward Butler Jr., 72, was driving east about 8:30 a.m. in a Toyota Camry on W Linebaugh Avenue near the intersection with Dale Mabry Highway. The car accelerated, hitting the back of a Nissan Sentra in the left-turn lane, then pushing the Sentra into the back of an Infiniti M35, officials said.
Deputies Michael Davidson and Matthew McCutcheon were on patrol nearby and spotted the commotion. Butler was inside the Camry, slumped over the steering wheel with his foot still pressed on the accelerator, officials said. The doors were locked. One of the deputies broke the passenger window to get in.
They began CPR on Butler, who had no pulse. Paramedics took him to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he was in critical condition.
