ST. PETERSBURG — A 39-year-old man died early Friday after being hit by a car at the intersection of 34th Street and 54th Avenue N, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The man, who hasn't been named by authorities, was walking in the crosswalk on the south side of the intersection about 1 a.m. when an SUV hit him. He died at the scene.

The driver, Christina M. Bayes, kept driving and was stopped by a Pinellas County deputy a few streets over, troopers said.

Bayes was booked into the Pinellas County Jail on charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving a death. She was being held in lieu of $10,000 bail.

State records show Bayes has been arrested 10 times in Florida. She was released from prison in October 2012 after serving 29 months for burglary, criminal mischief and drug possession and trafficking. Most recently, she served a short stint in the Pinellas County Jail for shoplifting in 2014.
