A Pasco High School student died over the weekend after he injured himself while visiting a spring in Gilchrest County.

Terry Marshall, 16, of Dade City went with friends to Blue Springs Park in High Springs in Gilchrist County, about 30 miles northwest of Gainesville, according to his mother, Taneta Morrell. They were jumping into the spring Friday night, Morrell said, when Marshall, who just completed his sophomore year at Pasco High, injured himself.

"That's the only story we got," Morrell, 38, said. "That he had jumped into the water and he didn't come back up."

The preliminary cause of death, according to the District 8 Medical Examiner's Office, was drowning.

Morrell and her family drove to UF Health Shands Hospital in Gainesville on Friday night to see Marshall, who had been taken there. He died Saturday.

The second youngest of four siblings, Marshall had aspirations of playing football at Clemson University before going on to the National Football League. He participated in the Pasco Police Athlete League, playing tight end and running back on offense and defensive tackle.

The Pasco County School Board held a moment of silence in Marshall's honor at Tuesday's board meeting.

"He was a really good kid," Morrell said. "He loved everybody."
