ST. PETERSBURG — A 26-year-old man died Saturday night after police said he struck a guardrail and was thrown from his car.

About 10:40 p.m., Maurice La'Trail Wheeler was driving westbound in the left median lane of Gandy Boulevard approaching the Interstate 275 overpass, according to St. Petersburg police.

Wheeler, who police said was speeding and not wearing a seatbelt, swerved to the right to avoid slow-moving traffic, causing him to lose control of his 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. He hit a guardrail then was thrown out of the car.

Wheeler was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, police said. He was pronounced dead about 2:45 a.m. Sunday.
