TAMPA — A man was seriously injured Wednesday after he stepped off a HART bus and into the path of a van on N Nebraska Avenue, Tampa police said.
Andrew J. Vanburan, 22, of Tampa got off the bus at Nebraska and E Skagway avenues about 6:45, failed to check for oncoming traffic and was struck by van heading south on Nebraska, Tampa police spokesman Steve Hegarty said.
Vanburan was thrown partially under the stopped bus, Hegarty said. He was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries that police said were not life-threatening.
Police closed Nebraska for about three hours during an investigation.
It's the second time in two months that a pedestrian was struck after getting off a bus.
A North Tampa woman died July 13 after she was hit by a car shortly after she stepped off a city bus. Danine Perdue, 31, had been riding the Route 18 Hillsborough Area Regional Transit bus along Livingston Avenue when she got off, walked around the back of the bus to cross Livingston and was hit at 148th Avenue, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. She died at the scene. Deputies said the driver of the Volkwagen Jetta that hit Perdue did not have enough time to react when she appeared from behind the bus.
