ST. PETERSBURG — A crane truck crashed and rolled down a grassy embankment Friday morning on Interstate 275 near 15th Avenue S, but police said the driver was not hurt.
The truck was southbound when it blew a tire, according to police. It plowed through a guardrail and snapped a streetlight beside the highway, shedding debris and tearing up grass along the way.
Lorne Marion, 49, lives across the street from where the truck came to rest. "It sounded like a bombing," he said. Marion ran outside when he heard the accident and said he saw the truck roll once down the hill.
Part of the light pole landed in his driveway, and the head of the fixture landed on his neighbor's roof.
Sandra Climes, who lives at 33rd Street S and 15th Avenue S, also heard the crash.
"It sounded like 'Boom! Boom! Boom! Boom!' " she said. "You ever hear thunder real hard? Like that."
By the time she rushed outside, police were already arriving and helping the driver walk away from the wreckage.
