DOVER — A Plant City woman died Monday night when she was hit by a car while checking on her SUV in the middle of the road.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 25-year-old Jessica Melgoza was driving west around 7:45 p.m. on State Road 574, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, when her 2004 Nissan Armada became disabled in the middle of the roadway west of Bethlehem Road.

Melgoza got out and was standing near the rear of her SUV but none of the vehicle's lights were on, troopers said.

Unable to see the vehicle or Melgoza in the roadway, Sandra E. Coleman, 75, of Plant City, driving a Hyundai XG350, struck the back of the vehicle and Melgoza, troopers said.

The Nissan was pushed into a driveway on the side of the road and Coleman's Hyundai came to a stop in a westbound lane.

Melgoza died at the scene of the crash, troopers said.
