CLEARWATER — A bicyclist was fatally injured Wednesday night when she was struck by an SUV while trying to cross the Duke Energy Trail on Wednesday night, according to Clearwater police.
She was identified as Carmen Charrez, 49. The incident took place at about 8:26 p.m. where Nursery Road intersects with the trail.
As she was headed south on the trail, police said she failed to yield the right of way. She was struck by a Chevy Tahoe that was headed east as it crossed the trail. The driver was identified as William Dailey, 40.
Charrez was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, where she was pronounced dead. The driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators, police said.
Charrez's friends complained to WFTS-Ch. 28 that there are no flashing beacons or other safety features where the trail intersects the road.
