Body found in Hillsborough River after swimmer vanishes in downtown Tampa

Authorities recovered a body late Thursday after a man disappeared while swimming in the Hillsborough River in downtown Tampa.

The man was seen swimming near the Tampa Convention Center about 4:30 p.m., according to Hillsborough sheriff's officials. A boater in the area later reported seeing the man struggling in the water.

A sheriff's dive team assisted Tampa police in searching for the man. His body was found about 5:15 p.m. near the Platt Street Bridge, Tampa police said.

His identity was not immediately released.
