CLEARWATER — Miguel Angel Cerda spent the past year stalking and harrassing a woman, police said. He left flowers, food, money and notes at her door.

Then Friday night, Clearwater police said Cerda forced himself into her home, beat her and used his phone to record himself sexually battering her.

Witnesses told police Cerda the stalking and harrassment had gone on for about one year. He’d often follow her home or wait at her apartment, they told police, and sometimes he’d park nearby. He repeatedly left items notes on her doorstep. He’d text her several times a day every day and bang on her doors and windows if she didn’t respond.

That pattern repeated itself Friday, Police said. Cerda left flowers and money at her doorstep, then waited for her to come home from work.

But this time police said Cerda then forced himself into her home and snatched away her phone when she tried to call for help. She said he knocked her to the ground and choked her until she could no longer breathe. He sexually battered her in a bedroom, police said, She tried to escape but he blocked her way, police said, and told her he wouldn’t move until she agreed not to call the police. Cerda’s phone was still recording at that point, police said.

Cerda was arrested Monday on charges of sexual battery, false imprisonment, video voyeurism, stalking, tampering with a witness, burglary and domestic battery with strangulation. He is being held without bail in the Pinellas County Jail.
