CLEARWATER — A city police officer was arrested early Friday morning after being involved in a physical altercation with his girlfriend, according to the Clearwater Police Department.

Officer Christopher England, who has worked for the department for five years, faces a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery and a felony charge of tampering with a witness, the department says.

The incident started just after midnight, police said, when a verbal dispute turned physical. England then attempted to prevent his girlfriend from calling 911, police said, which resulted in the tampering charge.

He was arrested by Clearwater police. The agency did not release any additional details about the incident or say if the girlfriend was injured.

England was booked into the Pinellas County jail where he was being held in lieu of $2,000 bail. The police department placed him on administrative duty pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
