TAMPA — All but one westbound lane on the Courtney Campbell Causeway have been reopened after a dump truck crossed the median and struck another vehicle, fatally injuring a passenger in the vehicle and leaving its driver with serious injuries this morning, police said.
Police announced before 11 a.m. that westbound lanes had been closed on the upper Tampa Bay crossing linking Clearwater and Tampa. A later alert said lanes were closed in both directions and an alert at 12:35 p.m. said the one lane had been reopened.
A dump truck traveling west on the causeway about 10:25 a.m. near Rocky Point Drive crossed over the median into the oncoming eastbound traffic, striking another vehicle head on, police said. It was unclear why the dump truck crossed the median.
The driver and a passenger in the vehicle received serious injuries. The passenger, a man, was pronounced dead later at a hospital.
The driver of the dump truck was not seriously injured and was cooperating with police.
Police didn't immediately identify any of the three people involved in the crash.
