TAMPA — A 78-year-old man was arrested Monday after he grabbed and tried to kiss a 15-year-old girl who had just gotten off the school bus, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

The incident took place at about 2:47 p.m., deputies said, at Humphrey Street and N Dale Mabry Highway.

Adoor Venugopal approached the Leto High School student and asked sexually-related questions, the Sheriff's Office said, and when she tried to run away he grabbed her by the hips and tried to kiss her.

The girl turned away and Venugopal kissed her on the cheek before she was able to push him away and run home, deputies said.

He was arrested on a charge of felony battery later that day. He was freed from the county jail on Tuesday after posting $2,000 bail.

The identity of the student was withheld by the Sheriff's Office.

Leto High sent out an automated phone call about the incident to student households and made announcements during school hours, warning students to stay alert on their way home, according to the Hillsborough County School District.
