ST. PETERSBURG — A jail inmate died Monday while undergoing surgery, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
Cesar Gonzales-Espana, 43, had suffered a medical episode at the Pinellas County jail on Saturday, the agency said, and was taken to Northside Hospital for medical treatment.
The paramedics arrived at about 8:10 p.m. at Gonzales-Espana's cell. They found no signs of injuries or that he had been involved in any incidents involving force, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Then on Monday, deputies said he underwent a surgical procedure in connection with Saturday's medical incident. But during surgery, he suffered complications and was pronounced dead at about 4:44 p.m.
Deputies said Gonzales-Espana had a pre-existing medical condition that was not disclosed. His death does not appear to be suspicious, the agency said.
He was booked into the county jail on June 2, awaiting sentencing on a federal charge of cocaine smuggling, according to the Sheriff's Office.
An autopsy will soon be conducted to determine the officials cause of death.
