A 43-year-old Ridgewood High School teacher faces allegations that he sexually battered a 16-year-old student, according to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.
Sean Gallegos, 43, faces two counts of sexual battery involving custodial authority, the Sheriff's Office said. He was arrested at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Oscar Cooler Sports Complex Park in Lutz and booked into the Hillsborough County jail. Deputies withheld the identity of the student because of the nature of the allegations.
Gallegos started working at Ridgewood High in August 2015 and taught robotics at the New Port Richey school, according to the school district. The student attended Ridgewood High and was sexually battered by Gallegos more than once in April, the Sheriff's Office said.
He was placed on paid administrative leave until the next school board meeting, where the board will be asked to suspend him without pay, said district spokeswoman Linda Cobbe.
"It's stunning that someone in his position would take advantage of a child like that," she said.
Gallegos had no previous disciplinary issues, Cobbe said. He was being held Wednesday at the Hillsborough County jail in lieu of $200,000 bail.
