Hernando bank robbery suspect recognized on video by his Sonny's BBQ shirt

A Spring Hill man faces charges after Hernando County deputies say he was seen on surveillance video robbing a bank on Friday.

Raul Velasquez, 38, turned himself in to deputies on Monday night, according to the Hernando County Sheriff's Office.

On Friday, a man — later identified as Velazquez — walked into a Chase Bank branch at 4279 Mariner Blvd. and handed the teller a note demanding an undisclosed amount of cash.

He then fled the scene in a red Mitsubishi Eclipse, according to the Sheriff's Office.

After obtaining a search warrant on Saturday, deputies said they located "several items of evidentiary value" at Velasquez's house, including a red Eclipse. Velasquez was not home at the time of the search.

Deputies were able to identify Velasquez as the potential robber after recognizing his shirt in the video as one worn by cooks employed by Sonny's Real Pit BBQ and confirming with Sonny's employees in at 4731 Commercial Way in Spring Hill that Velasquez — a former employee there — was the man seen in the video.
