TAMPA — A man robbed a Sunoco station with a BB gun early Friday morning and tried to run away, police said. But he didn't make it very far before the manager shot him twice with a pistol that fired real bullets.
Antonio Lee, 36, of Tampa, was taken to Tampa General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Tampa police said. Lee is charged with armed robbery.
Lee entered a gas station at 3401 East Hillsborough Ave with a black BB gun that looked like the real thing to man inside, Ali Alsadi, 40, of Seffner.
Lee took the money and ran, Alsadi chased after him, and Lee turned back toward the store, he told police. Alsadi fired two rounds into Lee's leg, police said.
Lee ran across East Hillsborough Avenue and collapsed from his injuries, police said.
It was not clear whether Alsadi worked at the store. He has not been charged.
BB guns are used in robberies from time to time, said Stephen Hegarty, police spokesman.
"Sometimes people do robberies with their index finger poking from under their shirt," Hegarty said. "I don't recommend it. Especially since everyone has a gun these days."
