BRANDON — A Brandon man was shot dead by his roommate early Wednesday after a heated argument.
It will be up to the Hillsborough County State Attorney's Office to determine whether the shooting was a criminal act or a case of self-defense.
Around 12:30 a.m., deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office found 59-year-old Donald Eugene Wood dead on the kitchen floor of his home at 1209 E Camellia Drive.
The shooter, Wood's adult male roommate, identified himself and put his hands up when deputies entered the home. The Sheriff's Office said it cannot identify the shooter because he also is a witness.
Wood lived in the single-family, three-bedroom home with his girlfriend, another adult couple and the shooter. That night, Wood and his girlfriend got into an argument, prompting the man to walk into their bedroom.
Wood told the man to "mind his own business," investigators said, and the argument escalated, moving into the common area of the home.
During the argument, Wood walked to the kitchen and armed himself with a kitchen knife. He began to move toward the man, who then pulled a handgun from behind his back and shot Wood at least once, according to investigators. Wood died at the scene.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is still investigating the shooting. The shooter was released and has not been charged with a crime, pending the outcome of an investigation by the State Attorney's Office.
The other couple living in the house were in their room during the fight and were not injured.
