CLEARWATER — Police arrested a man on an attempted murder charge after they say he beat his 83-year-old mother, officials said Wednesday.

Daniel Edward Richards, 60, is accused of throwing his mother, Catherine, to the floor and kicking and stomping her after a verbal argument Monday, police said. Richards told detectives several different stories of how his mother was injured, police said.

Catherine Richards was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, where she is in critical condition with multiple broken bones and internal injuries, police said.

Officers arrested Daniel Richards on Tuesday, and took him to the Pinellas County Jail, where he is being held without bail.

According to jail records, Daniel Richards has been arrested several times, including in January, when he faced charges of battery on a person 65 years of age or older and tampering with a witness.
