Estate of Avila man who killed his family and burned his home headed to probate court

The mother of the man authorities say killed his family and himself and torched their Avila mansion has filed in probate court to obtain whatever remains of her son's estate.

Mary Catherine Campbell, mother of Darrin Campbell, filed in Hillsborough County probate court June 6, stating she was the only surviving heir to her son's assets, which are not detailed or quantified in court filings.

Some time before dawn May 7, deputies say Darrin Campbell, 49, shot and killed his wife and two teenage children, set off fireworks in their home, and killed himself. No motive is known, and the case is still being investigated by the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

The probate case in Darrin Campbell's estate provides scant details. Mary Campbell, who lives in Arizona, appointed her son Dale, Darrin's brother who lives in Michigan, as her representative. No other relatives have submitted filings, court records show.
