LITHIA — Following a year-long investigation, Florida Department of Law Enforcement officials charged a Lithia woman Monday with stealing more than $500,000 from her employers.

Karla L. Reigner, 46, is accused of two counts of grand theft through embezzlement, one count of scheming to defraud, 60 counts of forgery, and 60 counts of uttering a forged instrument.

Reigner stole from two Tampa area heating and plumbing businesses, Scott's One Hour Air Conditioning and Heating and Benjamin Franklin Plumbing, which employed her beginning in 2011, FDLE agents said. Reigner worked for the companies as an accountant and bookkeeper.

Agents said Reigner siphoned money from the businesses by forging the owners' names on company checks, making them payable to cash or herself. She is also accused of using the owners' business credit cards without their permission.

She was booked into the Hillsborough County Jail on $300,000 bond.
