A man shot in the arm outside a Hudson strip club early Friday fended off his assailant with a shovel, according to the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.

That alleged assailant, Jonathan Luis Crespo, 22, of Spring Hill, has been charged with one count of attempted murder and one count of armed robbery.

About 2 a.m. Friday, Thomas Allopenna, 26, of Orlando, was leaving the Players Club on U.S. 19 when Crespo approached his driver's side window, according to the arrest report.

Without warning, Crespo fired five shots from a handgun, hitting Allopenna three times, the report says.

Allopenna got out of the truck and grabbed Crespo, who said, "Give me all your s---," according to the report.

A witness saw what was happening and ran to Crespo, hitting him with a shovel. Allopenna then took the shovel and started beating Crespo with it, the report says.

Both Crespo and Allopenna were taken to a hospital. Allopenna is expected to live. Crespo, however, "was unable to give a statement due to his injuries" and remains in the hospital, according to the report.

The 22-caliber handgun was found on the sidewalk near Allopenna's truck, according to the Sheriff's Office.
