ST. PETERSBURG — A man was arrested Thursday afternoon at St. Petersburg-Clearwater International Airport after security personnel found a gun in a bag he was trying to take on a plane.
Michael Shelton, 57, was going through an airport security checkpoint prior to boarding Allegiant Air Flight 890, bound for his home in Fort Wayne, Ind., when security employees saw the gun on an X-Ray image of his bag, authorities said. A further inspection of the bag found that the gun was a Smith & Wesson 9 millimeter handgun, authorities said.
Pinellas County sheriff's deputies were called to the airport at 4:17 p.m. after officials from the Transportation Security Administration notified them of the situation.
Shelton, who was cooperative with deputies, explained that he had forgotten the gun was in his bag, officials said. He was arrested on a charge of carrying a concealed firearm and booked in the Pinellas County Jail.
