Names released in University Mall area shooting that left one dead, one injured

TAMPA — Hillsborough sheriff's officials released the identities of two men involved in a shooting outside University Mall last week.

Eldrid "El" Jashad Martin, 28, was killed and James "Scoop" Lee Rodgers, 24, was injured in the shooting, authorities said.

Deputies found the two men at 1515 139th Ave. E when they responded to a call of shots fired around 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Martin died on scene and Rodgers was transported to Tampa General Hospital in serious condition, underwent surgery and is still recovering, authorities said.

The shooting broke out in a group, and witnesses have been reluctant to say who shot at whom, said sheriff's spokeswoman Cristal Bermudez Nuñez. The two men were believed to be shooting at each other, but that has not been confirmed, Nunez said.

Both men have lengthy arrest histories, state records show.

Martin has been arrested 22 times on charges including dealing in stolen property, possession of marijuana, trespassing and giving false information to a pawn broker.

Rodgers has been arrested 18 times in Florida on charges including burglary, cocaine possession, battery and possession of meth with the intent to sell, manufacture or deliver. He spent a year in state prison.

The Sheriff's Office asks anyone with information to call (813) 247-8200. Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward and can be reached at 1-800-873-8477.
