Pinellas detention deputy arrested on grand theft charge

LARGO — A detention deputy was arrested Friday on a charge of grand theft, the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office said.

Todd L. Brown, 46, called the payroll department of the Sheriff's Office after claiming his paycheck was not directly deposited into his bank account on two occasions in November 2013. He was issued two paper checks, the Sheriff's Office said.

Payroll later noticed an imbalance in the Sheriff's Office account and discovered that Brown was paid twice during two pay periods. According to detectives, he didn't notify the Sheriff's Office when his payment was correctly deposited into his bank account and cashed the paper checks anyway.

Brown, hired in 2005, turned himself into the Sheriff's Office on Friday morning. He has been placed on administrative leave without pay pending an investigation.
