Pinellas jail visitor arrested after visitation gets too explicit

Published May 3, 2012

When video visitation with Pinellas County Jail inmates was launched in the late 1990s, some prisoners' loved ones complained that conversations via a closed-circuit TV screen lacked intimacy.

Mitchell Thomas of St. Petersburg made an apparent effort to breach the technological divide when he visited his wife at the jail Tuesday. But as Thomas learned, the jail's video visitation center is no place to go looking for love.

Thomas, 46, was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of exposing his sexual organs after he bared himself to the monitor-image of his wife about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

Thomas' wife, Monique, 30, has been in jail since October on charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, disorderly intoxication, retail theft and domestic battery.

On Wednesday, Thomas was being held in lieu of $150 bail at — where else? — the Pinellas County Jail.
