Police: Mother used heroin outside her children's day care center

St. Petersburg

Mom used heroin by day care, police say

A mother dropping off her two children at a day care center used heroin in the parking lot along with a man who suffered an overdose, according to police.

Alicia Roxanne Adams, 30, was arrested about 9:30 a.m. Friday at the Young Achievers Learning Center on 13th Avenue N, police said. The 30-year-old man in the car, Joshua Mayer, was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover, authorities said.

Investigators said they found three syringes in Adams' purse and one tablet of Xanax. Inside the car, officers said, they found about 0.03 ounces of heroin and a small amount of marijuana. Police also found a used syringe just outside the vehicle.

Adams' children, ages 1 and 3, were safe in the day care and were taken into custody by the Department of Children and Families, according to police. Adams faces multiple drug possession charges.
