'Selfie' may lead to arrest in Tampa armed robbery

TAMPA — The 2013 Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year — "selfie" — may have taken on another definition: crimefighter.

That's because a selfie taken by an armed robber on a stolen cellphone may help lead to the assailant's arrest.

On Aug. 23, two suspects jumped out of a car near Hyde Park Cafe and robbed two valet workers at gunpoint, according to the Tampa Police Department. The suspects made off with cash and cellphones.

Days later, authorities said, someone using one of the stolen phones logged into the victim's Kik Messenger account and sent a photo he took of himself to the victim's friend. The recipient of the photo managed to take a screenshot of the selfie before it was deleted.

Authorities said they are trying to identify the male in the photo and determine if he was involved in the robbery. Anyone with information about the incident, or anyone who recognizes the man in the selfie, should call Crime Stoppers toll-free at 1-800-873-8477. Tippers may be eligible for up to a $1,000 reward.
