ST. PETERSBURG — A 55-year-old man walking with another man was struck and killed in a hit and run crash early Saturday morning, St. Petersburg police said.

Shortly before 2 a.m., Steven Anthony Stepo was hit as he tried to cross Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street S from east to west in the Roser Park historic district. The crash took place near the cemetery close to James Avenue S.

Police said it appeared that Stepo was struck by a vehicle heading south in the inside lane. The man walking with Stepo couldn't provide investigators much information about the vehicle, which never stopped, but said it might have been a black midsized truck. Police said it probably has damage on the front, hood and maybe the windshield.

Stepo, who lived at 550 62nd St. S, was taken to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg in critical condition and died just before 6 a.m.

Traffic homicide detectives ask anyone who saw the crash or might have information about the vehicle, its driver or the crash to call them at (727) 893-7780.
