ST. PETERSBURG — Police are investigating the shooting death of a 40-year-old man who was found slumped over in his car Sunday morning.

Officers responded after receiving a call about 9:30 a.m. and found the man dead in the car, parked at 2567 11th Ave. S. They identified him as Sheridan Thompson.

They said he died of a gunshot wound and that the address where he was found does not appear to be linked to the crime.

Investigators have ruled the death a homicide. No further information was immediately available. At 2:15 p.m., police said there were no suspects.

According to Pinellas County court records, Thompson had an open case in which he faced charges of shooting at or into a vehicle, aggravated assault, being a felon in possession of a firearm and criminal mischief.

Before that, records detail a long history of cases involving driving violations and drug possession charges.

"Why God?" Thompson's son, Sheridan Thompson Jr., wrote on Facebook. "I wish I could hug you just one more time and see you one more time. I know you want me to be strong but it's just so hard. Rest in peace Pops I love you we'll meet again some day."
