Tampa police disarm woman who harmed herself with a flare gun

TAMPA — A woman threatening to harm herself kept police at bay for two hours Sunday afternoon before she injured herself with a flare gun.

Tampa police said they got a call at about 12:26 p.m. that the woman was on the roof of a house at 2302 Idlewild Ave., just north of Hillsborough Avenue, threatening to hurt herself. The police Tactical Response Team arrived at the scene and attempted to negotiate with her. Police said she was armed with a flare gun and a rifle.

Part of Idlewild was closed to traffic and neighbors were evacuated as the negotiations continued for two hours.

The incident apparently ended when the woman injured herself with the flare gun, though Tampa police did not say how the injury occurred.

Tampa Fire Rescue treated her at the scene. She was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. Her identity was not immediately released.
