TAMPA — A 20-year-old man was shot and killed early Friday in an apartment complex west of Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park.

Freddy Benson was with several other people before 3 a.m. in a stairwell at the Oakhurst Square Apartments, 910 W Nassau St, when someone fired several shots in their direction, police said. Benson was hit at least once. He died at the scene.

Detectives are not sure if Benson was the intended target of the shooting, but officials said it did not appear to be random.

It was not the first time he was the victim in a shooting. In August 2015, Benson, who lives in Old Seminole Heights, was shot in the foot in the same West Tampa neighborhood where he died a year later. It was unclear if any arrests were made in that case.

No arrests had been made in his death late Friday.
