DADE CITY — A 22-year-old motorcyclist died Sunday and his passenger was critically injured from a collision with a pickup truck, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Markus Cody Rutland of Dade City died in the 8:30 p.m. crash at the intersection of U.S. 301 and Pioneer Museum Road.

Rutland's passenger, 20-year-old Shelby Lynn Powell of Dade City, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital.

The two were riding north along U.S. 301 on a 2005 Kawasaki Ninja as John Eric Belcher, 30, of Dade City, was driving west on Pioneer Museum Road in a 1994 Chevy K1500 pickup truck, the Highway Patrol said.

Belcher stopped at the intersection then drove west across U.S. 301, into Rutland's path, the Highway Patrol said. The motorcycle struck the back left of the truck.

The incident is still under investigation.
