A serious car crash involving a wrong-way driver closed the Belleair Beach Causeway on Wednesday morning, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.
Cpl. Kannika Nimithkoune was heading east on the Belleair Causeway just before 7 a.m. when she saw a Chevy Tahoe heading west in the eastbound lanes.
Nimithkoune tried to avoid a head-on collision, but the Tahoe struck the back driver's side of her marked Crown Victoria, the Sheriff's Office said.
The Tahoe then struck a concrete barrier and collided into a Ford van, which rotated and struck the front of a Dodge truck.
Nimithkoune was not hurt, but the other drivers and their passengers were hospitalized with injuries that did not appear life-threatening.
