Driver, 63, killed in two-vehicle crash on U.S. 301 near Thonotosassa

The crash happened about 8 a.m. Friday near the intersection of Elyssa Road.

THONOTOSASSA — A man died Friday morning when the car he was driving slammed into another vehicle headed the opposite direction on U.S. 301 near Thonotosassa.

Mark D. Vandeboe, 63, of Tampa, was heading south on the highway about 8 a.m. in a Chrysler PT Cruiser. The car veered into the northbound lanes and collided with a northbound Dodge pickup truck near the intersection of Elyssa Road, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The collision caved in the front of the PT Cruiser. Troopers found Vandeboe dead at the scene.

The pickup's driver, Michael Antonio Ramos, 22, and a passenger, Armando Ramos-Rosas, 53, both of Sarasota, were taken to Tampa General Hospital with serious injuries.

It was not immediately clear what caused the car to veer into the oncoming lanes.
