TAMPA — A tire fire sent plumes of smoke rising above the city on Thursday evening.
Flames consumed a pile of tires and trash at Alex's Metal Recycling LLC at 4407 Raleigh St. at about 6 p.m., according to Hillsborough County Fire Rescue, sending thick dark smoke into the air that was visible from across the bay area.
The trash pile had several hundred tires in it, firefighters said.
Crews worked for three hours to extinguish the blaze, which was visible along the skyline as the sun set. No one was injured in the fire, officials said.
Investigators determined the fire was an accident, and was ignited by a cutting torch being used to cut metal.
