TAMPA — Five people escaped a house fire early Friday in an East Tampa home.

The fire was reported about 6:17 a.m. in the house at 1309 E North Bay St. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames.

Firefighters said a man, two women and two children escaped unharmed.

Clutter in a lot outside the home made it difficult to fight the blaze, firefighters said. The intensity of the flames forced crews at one point to back out of the home. It took more than an hour to contained the blaze. The home was a total loss.

A cause had not yet been determined, but firefighters said it did not appear suspicious. The American Red Cross was assisting the family.
