BRANDON — Hillsborough County Fire and Rescue struggled Saturday to put out a house fire in Brandon in part because crews were blocked by family members' efforts to save several watercrafts.
Rescue units arrived at the house on the 700 block of Sailfish Drive around 11:50 a.m. Saturday. With heavy smoke and fire coming from the home, family members of the homeowners tried to remove two water scooters, a truck, a 24-foot boat and some used tires from the driveway.
The activity partly blocked Sailfish Drive, temporarily making it hard for crews to get to the fire. It also resulted in two minor injuries when a boat trailer collapsed.
It took 45 minutes to put out the blaze once firefighters were able to access the property, which led to significant damage to the home and also minor damage to a neighboring property.
Rescue crews took the two injured people to a nearby hospital. The watercraft and truck, however, survived unscathed.
