It’s not every day you see a helicopter land on the highway.

But that’s what happened Sunday when authorities responded to a seriously injured car crash victim near mile marker 193 on southbound Interstate 75.

The driver of a Nissan left the highway and crashed into a tree just southeast of Venice, said Lt. Gregory S. Bueno, a Florida Highway Patrol spokesman. Authorities closed all southbound I-75 traffic for a brief time around noon so a helicopter could land, load the injured passenger and fly him to Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

Southbound I-75 lanes have since reopened, Bueno said.

The driver, who authorities haven’t identified, suffered serious injuries in the crash, Bueno said.

The accident remains under investigation.
