TAMPA — A Hillsborough County Fire Rescue commander was arrested Wednesday on felony charges of domestic battery, deputies said.

It's the third time Lt. Daniel Reed, 38, has been arrested on domestic violence charges, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. He faced similar allegations in 2012 and 2014, records show. The outcomes of those cases were unavailable.

The most recent arrest took place after deputies said they received a report that Reed physically abused his live-in girlfriend several times between Dec. 26 and Dec. 27. The Sheriff's Office said Reed struck the woman several times during an argument that escalated into violence.

Reed is accused of twice choking his girlfriend, causing her to loose consciousness for an unknown amount of time, the agency said.

He faces charges of domestic violence battery and domestic battery by strangulation. He was booked into the county jail, where he was being held late Wednesday without bail.

His current employment status with the firefighting agency was not known.
