TAMPA — School children took back the streets near Mort Elementary School as they celebrated Walk to School Day on Wednesday morning.

Participants met at 7 a.m. at the corner of 18th Street N and 143rd Avenue E and walked the two blocks north to school, enjoying snacks and giveaways along the route. Hillsborough County deputies assisted as students crossed Bearss Avenue's four lanes.

Deputies were also present at bike racks to help students who rode to school properly fit their helmets.

Walk to School Day, which began in 1997 to promote safe travel to school, is an international event celebrated by children in over 40 countries.
