LAND O'LAKES — A 51-year-old man was killed Monday night when he lost control of his car and struck a utility pole, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash took place at about 7:22 p.m. Troopers said Scott Edward Butterfield was speeding north on Ehren Cutoff in a 2003 Buick Regal with passenger Jody Rae Branan, 68, approaching Horton Road.

Butterfield then lost control, swerved onto the shoulder and struck a utility pole, the FHP Said. He died at the scene.

Branan was transported to the Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point with serious injuries, troopers said.

Neither person was wearing their seatbelt at the time, according to the FHP. Alocohol was not a factor in the crash.
