Motorcycle driver, 20, hits pole and dies while speeding on Central, police say

ST. PETERSBURG — A motorcycle driver was killed after he struck a median, flipped, and hit a pole while speeding and weaving through traffic on Central Avenue, St. Petersburg police said.

The crash occurred as Maxwell William McMahan, 20, was headed west on Central Avenue near Causeway Boulevard about 4:50 p.m. Saturday, police said.

McMahan was driving a 2013 Honda motorcycle, weaving among several vehicles, when he struck the median curb, spun, flipped and struck a pole before coming to rest in the westbound lane, police said.

McMahan, who was wearing a helmet, was thrown from the motorcycle. He was transported to Bayfront Health St. Petersburg, where was pronounced dead.

The crash sent debris flying across the roadway and other cars may have been hit by it. Police asked that anyone with information call them at (727) 893-7780.
