Motorcyclist dies Sunday after losing control on U.S. 19 in Pinellas Park

PINELLAS PARK — A 22-year-old motorcyclist died early Sunday after being ejected from the bike and then run over by another vehicle, police said.

Christopher Mathew Babcock of Clearwater was riding a 2006 Kawasaki motorcycle at a high speed north on U.S. 19 just north of Bryan Dairy Road at about 4 a.m., according to Pinellas Park police. He lost control, separating from the motorcycle.

A passing driver attempted to flag down traffic, but Kellen Keglar, 20, of Seminole, who was driving a 2011 Ford Mustang GT, struck Babcock, police said.

Another vehicle, a 2012 Kia Optima driven by Giana Weissman, 49, of Tampa, also drove through the crash scene, hitting debris.

Babcock was pronounced dead at the scene. It was unclear if Keglar and Weissman were injured. Police said they were cooperating with investigators and likely would not face charges.

The crash closed the northbound lanes of U.S. 19 for several hours.

Investigators found a helmet at the crash scene, though it was not known if Babcock had been wearing it.
