An officer-involved shooting in Tampa on Saturday night left a car-theft suspect with non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
Tampa police officers Joseph Aduddell and David Alverson spotted a white Toyota Corolla with a missing headlight around 9:30 p.m. and stopped the driver near Florida Avenue and Ida Street in the Tampa Heights area. The vehicle, they soon learned, had been stolen, police said.
The driver, Joel Alexander Cook, 20, who was released from jail 10 days earlier, didn't stick around, authorities said.
Police said Cook took off, and later crashed the Corolla into a tree near Floribraska Avenue and Tampa Street.
When the officers arrived, Cook started backing up onto the hood of their patrol car, police said.
That's when the officers shot at him, police said.
Cook was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Cook was released Sept. 1 from the Hillsborough County Jail after serving four months for grand theft auto, according to jail records.
Aduddell and Alverson were placed on paid administrative leave, standard procedure after officer-involved shootings.
Both officers have been with the department about five years, authorities said.
No other details were available.
