Passenger killed when SUV crashes into tree in Plant City, deputies say

PLANT CITY — One person was killed Sunday when a sport utility vehicle crashed into a tree on Wiggins Road, deputies said.

The driver of the 2006 Saturn was heading south on Wiggins south of U.S. 92 about 6:10 p.m. when he drove off the road, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. The SUV struck a speed limit sign and then a tree.

A person sitting in the front passenger seat died at the scene from injuries sustained during the crash. The driver was taken to Tampa General Hospital with serious injuries and was in critical condition, deputies said.

The SUV was traveling about 45 miles per hour at the time of the crash. Deputies were still investigating to determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor. No other details were released.
