A man faces charges after police say he struck a pedestrian in St. Petersburg on Wednesday night and left the scene.

Police say Luis Gonzalez, 32, struck an unidentified male pedestrian around 10:30 p.m. while driving a 1997 Honda sedan southbound in the 400 block of 34th Street N.

The pedestrian is in critical but stable condition at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg.

Police were near the crash site and observed Gonzalez driving away, according to a news release.

He was arrested a short time later and taken to the Pinellas County Jail on charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving serious injuries.
