SPRING HILL — A 73-year-old man died Thursday after suffering a medical emergency behind the wheel that caused him to crash into another vehicle, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

John H. Saums of Spring Hill was pronounced dead at Bayfront Health Spring Hill. Here's how troopers described the incident:

Saums was driving a 2006 Dodge Ram south on Cobblestone Drive, approaching the intersection with County Line Road at about 3 p.m.

Christine Eith, 53, of Hudson was driving a 2000 Chevy Malibu north on East Road, approaching the same intersection.

Then Saums suffered a medical emergency, troopers said, and lost control of the Ram. The pick-up then strayed into the path of the Malibu.

The front right ends of the two vehicles collided, troopers said, and then the Ram continued into a dry retention pond and finally stopped in the southbound lane of East Road.

Eith suffered minor injuries and was treated at Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point.

Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, troopers said.
